Abstract
The article deals with legislation on live animal transport, more specifically transport of farmed animals for slaughter, fattening or breeding within the European Union and beyond its borders. Council Regulation (EC) No 1/2005 on the protection of animals during transport and related operations is analysed with respect to conditions of animal transport (including journey times, rest periods, temperature limits and space allowances), fitness of animals for transport and finally, export of live animals to third countries, with a special focus on sea transport.
