Abstract

The author deals with the interpretation of the beginnings of European nations in the oldest national chronicles (from the early Middle Ages to the middle of the 12th century). She focuses the main features of the founding legends.

These usually contain thre basic aspects: tha place where the nation came from and the environement in which it settled, its origin and the origin of its naming, and the way in which it appointed a ruler.
