Abstract

This study looks into concise historical compendiums, or "history in dates" in mediaeval Bohemia. These include Excerpta de diversarum chronicarum, written in the 1330s and incorporating the period of 80-1314, sometimes continuing until 1330, the so-called Beneš Minorit Chronicle giving a brief history of Bohemia from its Christianisation until 1492, the Chronicle of Abbot Neplach of Opatovice from the 1360s providing a brief compendium of universal and Bohemian history from the birth of Christ until 1365, and Annales breves Bohemici saeculi XIV from the end of the 1390s or early 15th century covering the period from 1310 to 1399, with a continuation until 1432.

It was a concise overview of Bohemian history from "the beginning" until the early 15th century, with a number of continuations, called Chronicon Bohemorum ab ipsorum inicio conscripta, also Chronicon anonymi, or "From Czech and Lech", which saw the greatest acclaim, however. This has survived in nine reviews which differ in their introduction and number of records, and attached continuations.
