Abstract
The chapter discusses the historical trends and development of Colombia in the interwar era. It tries to answer the question of when it is possible to see the causes of the unleashing of violence in this South American country (Violencia).
At the same time, it analyses the views of historiography on the subject. Developments in the two main political parties played an important role in the outbreak of the period of violence.
Indeed, their changes in the 1920s and 1930s led to a much greater radicalisation and division of society.
