Abstract

Gynecomastia (GM) is a benign proliferation of the glandular tissue of the male breast, and it is caused by an imbalance between a proliferative effect of estrogen and inhibitory effect of androgen. GM is high prevalent disorder.

It occurs in 50-60 % of adolescents and up to 70 % of males over 50 years. The cause of GM is found in 40-50 % of adult males.

GM is unilateral or bilateral. It is clinically characterized by the presence of a tender mass extending concentrically from the nipple.

Breast cancer and pseudogynecomastia must be distinguished. Treatment depends on the underlying cause and duration of gynecomastia.
