Abstract

Paper at the XXIII. Congress of the International Comparative Literature Association, Tbilisi, 24-29 July 2022.

It was part of the panel Re-emergence of the Realist Novel in East-Central Europe during Post-Stalinism. The paper commented on several novels by Ladislav Fuks, mainly The Cremator (1967) and Of Mice and Mooshaber (1970), focusing on their specific reworking and pastiche of the écriture of the 19th century realist novel and using Peter Brooks's concept of the melodramatic imagination, Monika Fludernik's "experiantiality" as well as Roland Barthes's "effet de réel".
