Methodical materials of the unfinished strategy type as a tool for developing the ability to solve word problems

Abstract

In the article, we present one new type of tasks that was created in the TAČR project - Support for the integration of mathematical, reading and language literacy among primary school pupils (2020-2023) and whose main goal is to enrich the spectrum of pupils' problem-solving strategies, to develop pupils' ability to solve word problems and closely related metacognition. Another goal is to use the specifics of word problems as a text and contribute to their understanding of word problems with appropriate activities aimed at developing pupils' reading and language literacy.

The new type of tasks is methodically described in the article and illustrated with two specific tasks. The first of these can be assigned to three different levels of pupils (2nd and 3rd grade, 4th to 6th grade, 7th to 9th grade).

The second task is intended for pupils of the 7th to 9th grade.
