Abstract

In the 19th century was Augustus no topic. Nevertheless in the novel from 1838 he was described a a tyrant.

The author of this article asks what impression the depiction of the first Roman emperor would make on the inhabitants of Saxony, where the classicist Becker lived and worked at Leipzig University in the time after the great defeat of Napoleon at Leipzig in 1813 and in the Vormärz period, a very turbulent time.
