Abstract

The critical edition contains previously unpublished documents concerning Czechoslovak-Vatican relations during the years 1928–1934. The materials explain the mission conducted in Prague from 1928 to 1934 by Nuncio Pietro Ciriaci, with its repercussions not only on the diplomatic level, but also on Czechoslovakia’s internal policy and religious environment.

After significant deterioration in Czechoslovak and Vatican relationship in 1925, Ciriaci was a key personality in the re-establishment of bilateral relations and the conclusion of the modus vivendi. The published documents illuminate difficult negotiations on the implementation of the modus vivendi, the circumstances of the inducing the Prague Archbishop Kordač to resign, or the internal political conflict related to Pribina’s celebrations in Nitra in 1933.
