Children and childhood. From the Middle Ages to the threshold of the Enlightenment

Publication at Faculty of Arts |
2019

Abstract

The publication deals with the topic of the life of children both in the Middle Ages and in the Early Modern Period, i.e. until the beginning of the 18th century, the so-called threshold of the Enlightenment in the Czech lands. The main questions posed by the authors were divided into two parts.

On the one hand, period views on children (educational texts, literature, law) were defined, and on the other hand, the concrete evidence of children's life. In the second case, the world of children was presented with regard to the differences of each social class, namely in the family, then in upbringing and education, and finally in the protection of children in exceptional situations (orphans, bastards, crimes).

The publication was prepared as a narrative book with a rich pictorial accompaniment, which pointed to the toys, clothing and objects of everyday needs from the Middle Ages up to the threshold of the Enlightenment.
