Abstract

The chapter analyzes, which focuses on the period of transition between the Carolingian and Ottonian dynasties in the first half of the 10th century, follows on from Izdný's research. It specifies the motivations leading to the separation of individual duchies, and the East Frankish kings' strategies during their efforts to preserve unity.

While Conrad I. failed in his efforts to base his authority on royal sacrality and military power, his successor Henry I. achieved this goal by offering friendly treaties and a consensual government.
