Word problems as a tool for integrating mathematical, reading and language literacy in primary school students

Abstract

The article presents an ongoing project aimed at linking mathematical, reading and language literacy of pupils in all years of primary school through work with word problems. The paper introduces the main goals and theoretical background of the project and offers an overview and brief characteristics of the four types of methodological materials being developed.

Their purpose is to support teachers in their efforts to develop pupils' ability to solve word problems through the development of reading, language and metacognitive skills. This article is the first of a forthcoming series of papers that will present all types of methodological materials in more detail.
