Effectiveness, motivation and the study results in tertiary education

Abstract

The study deals with the effectiveness of higher education. The success of students in the exam depends on many factors, especially their own efforts in the study, disposition to it, the quality of lectures, etc.

As three years of research has shown, students motivation to study the subject can be expressed by attending otherwise voluntary lectures. The main goal of the study was to find out what minimum attendance at lectures will guarantee students success in the exam.

The study involved 717 students taught by the same teacher. Its results show that if the student completed 77% of the lectures (ie 10 of 13), then he/she passed the first attempt at the exam.

Approximately 80% of students, with attendance in the range of 54-69%, also passed the exam (but needed more than one attempt). It was proved that the success of students in the exam (for different number of attempts) corresponds to the attendance rate (expressed in %) for lectures of the subject.
