Abstract

Vitreoretinal surgery is currently one of the most important parts of ophthalmology. Surgical treatment of the retina and vitreous has undergone considerable development in recent years.

For many years, vitreoretinal surgery was considered virtually impossible and attempts at surgical access to the vitreous region were not successful. The most significant rnilestone and a complete change in this field was the introduction of the pars plana vitrectomy surgical approach in the early 1970s.

In the last 50 years, pars plana vitrectomy has become the standard of care for many ocular pathologies such as retinal detachment, complications of diabetic retinopathy, vitreomacular interface diseases, intraocular inflammation, vitreous opacities, ocular trauma and many others. The book aims to introduce the basic principles of surgical treatment of the retina and vitreous to beginning ophthalmology residents.

The general part of the book describes the diagnosis required in the indication process and the general philosophy of the surgical approach to retinal pathology. The special section describes the specifics of surgical management for selected pathologies.
