Freedom of movement as a basic human right

Abstract

Freedom of movement is closely linked to the issue of migration and asylum. With some exaggeration, it can be stated that without freedom of movement in the sense of the possibility to cross national borders, neither migration nor refugees would exist.

A person becomes a foreigner or a refugee only after he has left the territory of the state of which he is a citizen. The concept of free movement of EU citizens as one of the pillars of the EU internal market is also based on the cross-border dimension of this freedom.
