Abstract

Editorial for special issue Current state and future perspectives of supercritical fluid chromatography. Supercritical fluid chromatography (SFC) has recently gained importance in the field of separation science.

Interesting properties of supercritical fluids for chromatographic separations including low viscosity and high diffusivity result in many inherent benefits, such as high separation efficiency, fast analyses, environmental friendliness, but also excellent complementarity to liquid chromatography and gas chromatography, and new possible separation selectivity. Although the development of SFC has initially been much slower, it is now an interesting alternative in many research and application tasks.

Coupling of SFC with mass spectrometry further enhances method sensitivity and selectivity in analysis of complex matrices.
