Technology in children's lives - 2nd Congress of Pediatrics for Practice in České Budějovice

Abstract

The paper discusses the issue of inappropriate use of technology by children, the possibilities of brief screening and education of parents of young patients (and themselves) in the office. Technology have radically changed how children spend their leisure time from the earliest ages.

In the developed world, an increasing number of children are using the latest technology on a daily basis, and most of them have experienced independent use of screens (most often a television, tablet or smartphone) before the age of one. The brains of children and adolescents are in a period of so-called critical development, which can be profoundly affected by technology.

This paper presents the results of my current research, which studied the type and frequency of social media activity in relation to body image patterns and risk behaviours indicative of eating disorders. The work revealed some practices that are related to unhealthy self-perceptions, such as that the use of social networking sites by individuals who may lead to an unhealthy relationship with one's own body and consequently to eating disorder risks.

These and other global data can be used as a basis for prevention and screening of adolescents, while formulating a specific screening interview scenario and recommendations. The results are based on the thesis "Manifestations of objectification theory on social media in women with eating disorders".
