Abstract

History of a particular institution, the Italian Hospital in Prague, from the end of the 16th to the end of the 18th century is a notable example of the formalization, professionalization and medicalazation of care for children. The paper deals with its development form of provision of a refuge for the most helpless members of the society (abandoned newborn and orphans) to the complete transfer of the social-health institution entirelly controlled by the authorities of the state and the faculty of medicine.
