Stress in teaching in mixed research

Abstract

The chapter presents and reflects the results of the extensive research on teacher burnout syndrome in the Czech Republic. The research was conducted as combination of the quantitative correlation survey (n = 2,394) and the qualitative case studies in twelve schools. The analysis of the case studies helped to understand the mechanisms of how burnout develops and to confirm patterns that resulted from the survey.

Our research pointed out to the general methodological issue of focusing on individual teachers - the absence of an intermediate school level. Research in which the analytical unit is only the individual teacher provides description but cannot sufficiently explain the topics studied in an institutional context.
