Teaching Communication with Patients in the Simulation Centre

Abstract

The main goal of teaching the Czech language to international students at medical faculties is to facilitate communication with patients in a hospital setting. The current COVID-19 pandemic and the use of distance learning have made direct contact between students and patients impossible.

To solve this difficult situation, we decided to use a newly opened simulation centre. Using various scenarios, students take medical histories from a mannequin that can respond in Czech via a native speaker in the room next door.

Everything is recorded, and the simulations are analysed and corrected. In this paper, we will analyse the advantages and disadvantages of this alternative form of teaching as well as describe the difficulties associated with this form of language learning and how traditional language teaching has to be methodologically adapted.
