Applied theater and drama as a qualitative research method for investigating work life

Abstract

There was a question at the beginning. How can applied theater and drama be used as a tool for collective reflection? The intention of the presented pilot phase of the research was to experimentally verify the proposed qualitative research design of a participatory nature, based primarily on so-called theater-based research, and to practically examine the potential and possible limitations of this experience-based research design

The collection of research data took place during a two-day workshop with members of one work team within the organization STOCK Plzeň – Božkov s.r.o.. Through interaction modeling of the procedures (in this case) of the so-called applied theater and drama. The use of theatrical conventions and the dramatization of the topic violates valid physical, social and psychological laws. This creates a new, artificial (theatrical world) in which, through theatrical procedures, a reflective space is created, allowing to look at the situation in a new way and from different angles (positions). In the atmosphere of this heightened awareness, the team and I analyzed this fact together. Reflective practice was our basic tool, a way to grasp what we had experienced, think about it, and continuously and retrospectively, consciously, evaluate our theater-dramatic experience.

Those interested will be presented with visual, audio and video material from the research workshop and can discuss the selected research strategies and their use in current pedagogical research right on the spot.
