Vaze et al. performed an anatomic study of 6 human postmenopausal female cadavers to describe the detailed anatomy of the distal course of the dorsal nerve of the clitoris. They documented the course of the dorsal nerve of the clitoris from the site of piercing of the perineal membrane to its terminal branching, including several valuable measurements and 2 schematic drawings.

Surprisingly, they omitted to describe or even discuss the relationships of the dorsal nerve of the clitoris and pubic bone, which are, however, clearly apparent on both of their schemes. As previously described at this region, the dorsal nerve of the clitoris runs in the sulcus nervi dorsalis clitoridis, where the possibility of nerve injury during particular surgical approaches has been repeatedly noted..

Aside from the surgery for stress urinary incontinence, mentioned by the authors, the role of the close relationship of the dorsal nerve of the clitoris and pubic bone has also been stressed in other surgical approaches such as reduction clitoridoplasty in girls with adrenogenital syndrome, conversion of genitalia in transsexual patients, or mobilization and separation of the common sinus into the urethra and vagina in the surgical treatment of congenital urogenital sinus anomalies.
