Abstract

This review summarizes current knowledge about functional morphology and clinical importance of articular disc (discus articularis) of the temporomandibular joint. Step-by-step, the clinical-anatomical aspects of its important parts, i.e. anterior attachment, anterior band, intermediate zone, posterior band and bilaminar zone, including associated Zenker's retroarticular plastic pad.

Additionally, the role of articular disc particularly in temporomandibular movements and centric relation determination is outlined.
