Abstract

Using ratios of non-synonymous to synonymous mutations is a common approach to standardize the variable of a trait (a numerator) to a predictor variable (a denominator). Yet, interpretations of ratios are not straightforward and are often non-intuitive.

Still, simple ratios of non-synonymous to synonymous mutations are widely used in evolutionary biology and population genetics.
