Behavioral and psychological symptoms and dementia syndrome

Abstract

Behavioral and psychological symptoms are part of the dementia syndrome, but can also precede it. During the progression of dementia, they occur in practically all patients - to varying degrees and at different stages of the progression of this syndrome.

Adequate attention has not yet been paid to them, although it is widely known that they increase the burden of care and worsen both the quality of life of dementia patients and their overall prognosis. In the vast majority of cases, the etiology of these symptoms is multi-causal, and in their management it is necessary to look for both predisposing factors and triggers.

It can be pain or other causes of discomfort, unsatisfied needs, which the patient with dementia often cannot name. The approach must therefore be comprehensive and must use both psychosocial interventions and appropriate pharmacotherapy, where attention must be paid to adequate pain treatment and sufficient cognitive dosage, possibly a combination of them.
