Abstract
Provisions on democratic principles in the TEU are introduced by an article dedicated to citizenship of the Union. Democracy is one of the basic values of the Union (Article 2 TEU) and its centerpiece at the EU level is the Union citizen (see also the preamble to the Treaty on European Union).
One of the basic prerequisites for democratic governance in the EU is EP elections, which create a direct link between citizens and the Union.
