Jaroslav Bidlo and 'School of Jaroslav Goll'

Abstract

The study analyses relations between Jaroslav Bidlo (1868-1937) and other Czech historians connected with so called 'scholl of Jaroslav Goll'. Bidlo was professor of East European and Balkans history at Charles University in Prague and belonged to the first generation of Goll´s students.

Sequential deterioration of his relationship to his teacher, culminating in breaking of contacts in 1917, proceeded in close connection with Bidlo´s relationship to Goll´s prominent follower Josef Pekař and his role in the Czech Historical Review (Český časopis historický). The author´s opinion the rupture was evoked more as a consequence of personal antipathies and positons of power in the community of Czech historians, than as a result of methodical and professional disputes.
