Abstract

The paper presents the involvement of women in municipal politics at the beginning of a newly established Czechoslovak Republic on the example of Poděbrady councilwoman Marie Komárková. The first part concisely sums up the life of Marie Komárková before 1918 and entering municipal representative positions.

The second part of the study presents a view of individual Czech political parties, which is demonstrated by articles in their party press. The third part of the study deals with the self-government of Poděbrady between 1919-1923.

It captures changes in the composition of self-governing institutions, influenced by the universal suffrage. In the final part, the period is viewed from the perspective of Marie Komárková, a witness and councilor at the same time, who captured social processes in her memoirs and remarks.
