Uniform protocol for testing antiviral protective equipment for medical device manufacturer

Abstract

To determine antiviral effect of nanomaterial or radiation, the model recombinant baculovirus and insect cells are used in the following protocol. Baculoviruses, as Coronaviruses, are enveloped viruses, thus the same antiviral effects of nanomaterial or radiation may be assumed.

There are several advantages of the presented protocol. The cells are infected with recombinant baculovirus expressing enhanced green fluorescent protein (EGFP), thus infected cells can be easily detected and quantified.

Moreover, the presented protocol may be performed in laboratories with BSL2 level. In our protocol we used baculovirus rBac-MPyV-VP1-EGFP-tVP3 (Bouřa et al.,2005; doi: 10.1016/j.febslet.2005.10.062) but any other baculovirus expressing fluorescent protein may be used.
