Abstract

The term post-intensive care syndrome (PICS) refers to a set of consequences that persist after discharge from the intensive care units. It is mainly a long-term impairment of cognitive, mental and physical functions.

Patients with diabetes are at increased risk, especially of physical dysfunctions. In recent years there has been talk of a potential direct connection between stress hyperglycemia and later development of manifest diabetes mellitus.

Thus, diabetes is not only a risk factor of PICS, but perhaps directly one of its components
