Abstract
Karel Slavoj Amerling (1807-1884) studied medicine, but devoted himself to pedagogy and environmental issues. His demand for the protection of endangered species of plants and animals, his recommendation to combine theoretical teaching with production practice, his emphasis on illustrative and logical teaching, and his principles of caring for handicapped youth were ahead of their time.
