St. George's Abbey in Prague through the eyes of the writers of the pre-Hussite period

Abstract

St. George's Abbey was the oldest monastic house in Bohemia and, thanks to its location in the heart of Prague Castle, traditionally ranked among the most prestigious female convents in Central Europe.

The book illuminates the functioning of this complex ecclesiastical institution based on the analysis of four exceptional sources. These texts-the memorial book of the Church of St.

George, the spiritual mirror of the Benedictine nuns of St. George's Convent, the description of the coronation of Queen Sophia of Bavaria, and a commentary on Benedict's rule addressed to one of the nuns-together provide insight into the daily and festive life of the abbey during the reign of Charles IV and Wenceslas IV.

They are made accessible to readers through both the edition and the Czech translation.
