Designing an introductory course in translation theory and practice: Greetings from a multilingual classroom

Abstract

The aim of this paper is to present the process of preparation of a translation course called Introduction to Translation Theory and Practice (Překladatelská propedeutika), taught to BA students at the Institute of Translation Studies, Charles University in Prague. The course is attended by Czech students as well as German-speaking students whose mother tongue is not Czech.

Both the variety of nationalities and the fact that the course is attended simultaneously by first-, second- and third-year BA students present a considerable challenge to the teacher, whose goal is to adjust appropriately the dynamics and intensity of the course.
