France and Sugar Industry in 21st Century

Abstract

The article aims to briefly present France's path to becoming the world's top beet sugar producer. The text seeks an answer to the development of the French sugar industry, especially in recent years.

France has been making its way among the leading beet sugar producers since the beginning of the 19th century. After the Industrial Revolution, the 1950s and 1960s were crucial for the country, when sugar institutions were established.

Although France is currently still one of the largest producers of beet sugar in the world, the deepening crisis of the European beet and sugar industry, which began in 2017, has not left it unscathed. As a result the country faces the closure of sugar factories or a reduction in the number of beet fields.

On the contrary, a positive trend is evident in the efforts to strengthen the organic beet sugar production sector, in which France lags behind other European countries.
