Crux's school codex

Publication

Abstract

An internet visual annotated presentation of manuscripts State Regional Archive in Třeboň, A 4, of Crux of Telč. This codex is one of the most diverse manuscripts of Crux of Telč - it contains Old Czech lyrics, works of Roman classics, Latin school texts, Czech and Latin songs, extracts from authorities, grammatical notes, etymological explanations, glossaries, theological and astronomical treatises, recipes and riddles. Some texts have survived only here - for example, the oldest Czech collection of proverbs attributed to Smil Flašek of Pardubice, or three Latin speeches by the schoolmaster, perhaps written by Crux himself.

Crux copied the collection in the 1550s, during his time at the schools in Soběslav, Roudnice and the University of Prague. Four other scribal hands appear in it. Crux seems to have had several originally separate parts bound into it - it is not clear according to what criteria he arranged the individual components. Crux added a table of contents at the beginning and annotated and corrected the other pages Today the codex is stored in the State Regional Archive in Třeboň under the signature A 4.
