We support the learning of Czech by children and pupils of foreigners : Methodological and teaching materials for the 3rd - 9th grade of primary schools : Part 2.

Abstract

This work and the "diagnostic tool to determine the language level of foreign pupils" is an exceptional authorial achievement (two of the outputs of the European project mentioned below), which is the result of the five-year project "Step-by-Step Common Education and School Support. Implementation of the Action Plan for Inclusive Education - Methodological Support" (APIV A), implemented by the National Pedagogical Institute of the Czech Republic (NPI CR), project registration number: CZ.02.3.61/0.0/0.0/16_020/0004410. The main contribution of the publication is to provide practical and theoretical background for pedagogical staff who take care of foreigners in Czech primary schools and strive for the fastest possible integration into the school environment. Both the first and the second part of the monograph contribute to increasing the effectiveness of education of foreign pupils and to the gradual building of their pupils competence.

This material is the second part of a two-part manual and serves as a support for teaching Czech as a second language to foreign pupils and pupils with a different mother tongue (hereinafter referred to as OMJ). The material is freely downloadable and is intended as a tool especially for beginning teachers educating foreign pupils at language level A1-B2 according to the SERRJ (in teaching pupils in the age category of grades 3-5, the materials are aimed at developing skills and abilities up to language level B1). In addition to the theoretical basis and methodological recommendations for the development of communication skills in Czech, the publication contains worksheets with texts, exercises, pictures, audio recordings and a key. The aim is that the teacher can download the necessary parts and use them directly in the classroom. The worksheets include detailed methodological comments on the teacher's individual steps, on the variation of the tasks (simplification, difficulty), on the possible development of the activities, etc. The teaching materials focus on the ways of solving the problems outlined in Part 1 of the manual, with detailed comments showing how to develop the communication level of the foreign student in Czech and how to lead him to a higher level. The material provides inspiration especially for beginning teachers in this field. The contribution of this handbook is the extensive commentary on the individual steps of the teacher's work and exercises, as well as the linking of the theoretical basis with practical application. In addition, it is a handbook based on the recently developed European Reference Framework for young people (CEFR Companion Volume with New Descriptors for ages 7-10 and 11-15), not on the SERRJ for adult speakers, and applies the descriptions given in this source to English. In this respect, it is one of the first works in the field of education of foreign learners in Czech as a second language.
