Plenary lecture at the international fennistic conference dealt with the possibilities, limits and boarders of translation in case of canonic texts of national literatures. As an example served the Finnish classical novel by Aleksis Kivi and its new edition rewritten or translated by Juha Hurme.

The focus was on the questions of word order, choice of words, punctuation, and the impact of the changes made by Hurme in the new edition on the rhythm and style of the text. Finally, the fact who can be the readers of the new edition of Kivi's novel was discussed, too.
