Global streaming services are perceived as a major source of audiovisual entertainment throughout various countries regardless of cultural and national heritage of the viewers. On a domestic level, the VOD market of many countries includes nationally established platforms which contribute to the competitive environment of the on demand audiovisual services.
In 2018 was published a set of rules for audiovisual media services amending the AVMS Directive, one of them being the necessity of a 30% share of European works in VOD catalogues at minimum. In addition, each country can set its own quota.
In reality, the main issue at hand is that American produced content is usually heavily promoted and therefore its potential is raised. This leaves room for questioning whether the regulation on the European market is efficient and if it fulfills its purpose from the side of a global streaming service as well as a local one.
