Abstract
Czech scientific journals struggle with a limited supply of suitable texts. Is there any justification for their continued existence? In a number of magazines, they made the understandable decision that it was not.
These journals thus want to meet the demands of academic excellence, which they intend to continue to strive for. In addition to achieving excellence, academic publications play or should play other roles, in which availability in the national language can only help them, and unavailability, on the contrary, makes it difficult to play these roles.
Although it is clear that accessibility in Czech alone cannot guarantee the fulfillment of these roles. In the following lines, I will distinguish three such roles outside of excellence - educational (1), integrative (2) and critical (3).
