Abstract

The paper presents the preserved scholarly correspondence of Antonín Škarka and Dmitrij Čyževskij from 1939-1972. This correspondence demonstrates that both scholars despite the impossibility of encounters in person were able to establish and develop a remarkably intensive and fruitful collaboration in the field of Czech literary history.

In the 1960s, they even managed to create a unique edition work team to publish Czech literature. This collaboration eventually resulted in the constitution of a unique research and publishing team across the Iron Curtain.

Thus, the preserved correspondence of A. Škarka and D. Čyževskij provides unique information about some of the principles of scholarly communication across the Iron Curtain and about the problems and limits of the operation of the humanities on both sides of the Iron Curtain in the 20th century.
