Abstract

An afterword to a new Czech translation of Jane Austen's novel Emma. Starting with the early Czech reception and the earlier, falsely idyllic image of Jane Austen and her fictional worlds, it focuses first on the contribution of Denys Harding to Austen criticism and the relevance of his famous essay "Regulated Hatred" to the reading of Emma.

In its second part, the text analyzes relationships between the characters and the way their interactions are used to illustrate contemporary social inequalities.
