Abstract

The aim of this paper is to discuss a new interpretation of the so-called false shafts from the period of the Old Kingdom on the basis of the recent discoveries in Abusir. On the basis of the available archaeological evidence and common features of similar contexts from the Memphite necropolis it is possible to propose that these shallow shafts might have served as embalmers’ deposits, intended to dispose of objects used during the funerary rites.
