Anatomical votive bronzes in pre-Roman Central Italy

Abstract

Anatomical votives have largely been considered by scholars in connection with Roman expansion in Central Italy. Within this frame of "Religious Romanization", scholars have largely viewed the presence of the anatomical terracottasof the 4th-2nd cc.

BCE as the material manifestation of Roman presence in the religious sphere of the Italian peninsula. This paper presents the results of from recent and ongoing archaeological studies in Central Italian sanctuaries and reassesses the influence of Rome on local religious traditions.
