Abstract

Participatory mapping is an example of a bottom-up approach to use of GIS technology and public involvement in spatial data collection, visualization and their use in practice. The paper outlines the current trends of participatory mapping methods, categorizes them, characterizes the categories according to their typical features, and provides concrete examples of application.

The result of the analysis brings four groups of approaches - perception mapping, local spatial knowledge, remote mapping and passive location mapping.
