Abstract
The article sketches the external history of the Prague Linguistic Circle. It presents the sources of inspiration of the circle, basic data on the innovative functional-structural approach of the circle to linguistics (and literary studies), and key ideas enshrined in the “Theses of the Circle.” It provides biographies of its main personalities and describes the lectures and activities of the circle in its two main phases.
