Abstract

The article deals with cleavages between individual representatives of the Church as well as between the Church and the state in the period following the battle of White Mountain. These cleavages were often related to a parallel process of centralization of both the Catholic Church and habsburg monarchy.

It focuses on mapping complicated relations between individual Church actors whose position and authority were often ambiguous and prone to changing over time. The crucial conflict pertained especially to the position of bishops, since both rome and the Court in Vienna wanted them to be subordinated to their authority.

The article also lists examples illustrating other areas of conflicting interests that could potentially develop into a crisis.
