The Course "Theory of Interpreting and Interpreting Research Methods" in a different way (?)

Publication at Faculty of Arts |
2022

Abstract

The Institute of Translation Studies of the Faculty of Arts of Charles University has been offering compulsory semester-long courses on Theory of Interpreting and Methods of Research in Interpreting in the Master's programme in Interpreting for many years. In the new accreditation (2021/2022), these courses have been merged into one joint course.

The author outlines the content of this upgraded course and reflects on how to make this course more attractive and "digestible" for students. She gives examples of the approach taken, the materials, tools and new technologies used and the more active involvement of students in the learning process, as well as the activation of their critical thinking and independent work and self-initiative. She mentions and showcases this year's "seminar papers" done by students in the form of ppt presentatios (case studies) and of posters about visiting professors who had their master-classes over the years in these courses at the Institute, both in person and, in recent years, online.

She concludes with a reflection on possible improvements or changes - also based on the students' anonymous evaluation.
