Abstract

The aim of the unique monograph is to combine the latest findings in the pre-operative preparation of seniors from an internal point of view, to evaluate their health risk, so that the subsequent anesthesia-resuscitation and, above all, surgery procedure will bring the best results. In the first, internal part, the authors discuss the assessment of biological and calendar age criteria, issues of sarcopenia, osteoporosis and age-related immunological deviations.

In the anamnestic analysis and physical examination, they approximate the changes given by age and clarify the concept of geriatric frailty. In the subsequent part, the organ risks of the operation are captured in detail from the point of view of the main organ systems: cardiovascular and vascular, lung disease, diabetes mellitus and its treatment in the elderly, metabolic syndrome, renal risk, gastroenterological complications, neurological diseases and prevention of thromboembolic disease.

Special attention is paid to the metabolic-nutritional status both in the preoperative and postoperative period and to rational procedures with the aim of optimizing it. Other chapters are devoted to special cardiovascular issues, issues of preparation and treatment in patients with kidney failure, and the final chapter of this part discusses in detail the early and long-term rehabilitation of operated seniors.
