Abstract
Based on nearly two decades of fieldwork in Hulun Buir (Inner Mongolia), the paper describes its complex socolinguistic settings and argues that a unique linguistic environment with complex and layered structure had formed there by the mid-20th century. Hence, with the individuallanguages being endangered to various degrees, this unique environment is being lost as a whole.
