Connecting the Earliest Documented Dagur Songs with the Memories of Elders

Abstract

This paper provides the linguistic and cultural description of Dagur songs by discovering the connections between the songs recorded or written down by the researchers in the early twentieth century and the memories they evoke in Dagur elders in terms of their wider context; including the ways in which they are, or were, preserved in the community. For the first time the transcription of a unique example of Dagur song recorded by H.

Haslund-Christensen in late 1930s was made public in this paper, while the modern data are based on the recordings obtained during the author's fieldwork in Hohhot and Hailar in 2016 and 2017.
